About St.Michael's Homes

A community of care, built on compassion.

For over fifty years, St. Michael’s Homes has provided mental health and substance
use services rooted in connection, dignity, and recovery. We offer a continuous-care
model that includes 97 beds across five bed-based locations, along with outpatient
counselling, psychotherapy, and community drop-in centres serving the unhoused and
precariously housed. Our work supports individuals facing the greatest barriers to
stability, health, and belonging.

Our team of more than 100 staff members shares a mission:

Our History

In 1974, a small group led by Sister Anne Marie Carey of the Sisters of St. Joseph founded St. Michael’s Halfway Homes to support men transitioning from detox to community life. The first residence opened on Rusholme Road in 1976, offering counselling in a home-like setting. By the 1980s, the organization had expanded across several Toronto locations, including Matt Talbot House and additional residences serving those living with chronic alcohol use and homelessness.

In 2005, we became St. Michael’s Homes, a name that reflects the growth of our programs and the strength of our mission. Today, our services have grown to include outpatient counselling, residential treatment, and drop-in programming. But our founding values remain unchanged: care, dignity, and support for people navigating mental health and addiction.
